REVIEW: DreamWorks' "Spirit Riding Free"

Coming to Netflix May 5th

When my daughter was younger she was WILD about horses - a love inspired by the DreamWorks Oscar-nominated film "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron." She called it "the horse movie," and she loved it so much that we went through two copies of the DVD, one horse-themed birthday party, and endless acting out of her favorite scenes! I enjoyed the movie too, and as any parent whose kid has been obsessed with a grating cartoon can tell you, that's a rare treat.

Considering our history with "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron," I was happy to learn about the new Netflix series "Spirit Riding Free" - launching tomorrow, May 5th! "Spirit Riding Free" centers on a group of three friends, who together experience coming of age and the power of friendship. Lucky, a gutsy 12-year-old girl, befriends a wild mustang she names Spirit. With her two best friends, Abigail and Pru, and their horses by her side, they explore a world filled with endless rides and never ending fun. Together they push their own limits and discover what it truly means to be free!

Last week a sweet group of Macaroni Kid readers got together at The Arena for a special party and preview of "Spirit Riding Free." Judging by the kids' reaction to the show, it's going to be a big hit! Even with snacks, activities, and other kids around these kids were hooked on the show. As a mom, I enjoyed the positive messages about choosing friends wisely, being empowered, and taking chances. Look for "Spirit Riding Free" on Netflix, starting tomorrow!
