How The Coo Coo's Nest Got its Name

By Holly Christy, Publisher October 25, 2018

When Jen Maloni started painting furniture at The Blue Hearth in Poolesville, she never could have imagined that it would one day lead her to own and operate a small business so popular that her inbox would be flooded with referrals, and people are willing to wait months to have her expertise on their projects. During her time there, the market fell and people were having trouble affording the look they had their hearts set on for their homes. So Jen began working with her clients to save money by reusing what they already had. Giving new life to old furniture led to Jen being hired to do some custom work on the side. She met Carlene, her eventual partner, and in short order opened her own business!

At this point, Jen began daydreaming about going into business for herself – a dream practically imposed upon her by a clamoring fan base! She laughed when she told me that one day she and her husband were brainstorming names for the business, and he suggested “Furniture by a Crazy Lady.” But sure enough, that suggestion is what led to the name you’ve likely heard recommended over and over again: The Coo Coo’s Nest.

Now in its sixth year, The Coo Coo’s Nest is riding a wave of success from hundreds of homeowners who are thrilled with the results of their projects. Hiring The Coo Coo’s Nest to redo kitchen cabinets, banisters, fireplace surrounds, painted brick or any number of decorative projects is likely to be more cost-effective and eco-friendly than dumping what you have and buying something new. Jen estimates that painting cabinets is about one-third of the cost of buying replacements. But even better than that, you’re sure to have a truly custom result that’s just what you wanted rather than a generic look bought off the shelf of a major retailer.

Because The Coo Coo’s Nest has been working locally in this niche for several years, they are a good place to start when you have a major home improvement to make. Jen and Carlene work with all local, trusted contractors to provide countertops, carpenters, lighting, and flooring. They say that homeowners and contractors alike are often surprised to see these two petite women doing difficult, hands-on home improvement work, but that they wouldn’t have it any other way. They love what they do, and their reputation precedes them.

If you have a kitchen that needs updated cabinets, a fireplace surround that needs a facelift, a banister that needs to get with the times, or any other specialty painting project, I’d urge you to get in touch with The Coo Coo’s Nest right away – their schedule is already booking into Spring 2019!
