Top 10 Reasons to Enroll Your Child at Hiya Karate

It’s Not Just About Physical Fitness!

1 – Physical Fitness

Kids and adults of all ages can benefit from regular physical activity. Starting at the age of 3, our program focuses on helping children build coordination, balance, and controlled movement. By the time our students reach elementary school age, we introduce the development of strength and flexibility through martial arts while continuing to build on the previous skills. Martial arts is proven to be beneficial for adults of all ages due to the individuality of the program. From young adults to senior citizens, the mental and physical development serves to promote overall health in many areas. Hiya Karate offers classes from ages 3+ giving kids and adults the opportunity to practice martial arts, specifically Tang Soo Do.

2 – Self-Defense

We practice martial arts, so we do not have to use it. We teach our students the best way to defend yourself is to walk away. Unfortunately, that method isn’t always possible. Karate is first and foremost, a system of self-defense that kids and adults can both benefit from. Knowing they can keep themselves safe instills a strong sense of confidence and improves their capacity to avoid unsafe situations altogether. However, should the situation arise, their training will provide them with the ability to protect themselves. At Hiya karate, self-defense is taught in the form of one-steps, grabbing defense, and forms (katas).

3 – Special Needs

At HiYa Karate we take great pride in our special needs program (The Panda Program). We keep our class sizes small to allow for more personalized and individual attention. During classes, students of all ages will be provided the opportunity to explore martial arts but also improve their physical fitness. We believe in empowering our students with our Yes I Can! attitude.

4 - Individual and Team Sport

For a variety of reasons, some kids don’t do well on team sports. At HiYa Karate, we combine both individual goals with a team atmosphere. Each student is on their own journey through martial arts. No two students will walk the same path, nor do we expect them too. Our classes provide the freedom and independence to develop your martial arts skills and knowledge at a pace that is right for you. While your journey might be unique, our class atmosphere will provide the opportunity for students to bond with their classmates and provide the positive aspects that usually come with team sports. When students enter the dojo, egos are put aside and no matter the age or the belt, it is a culture of encouragement, providing an opportunity to lift each other up.

5 – Confidence

Today’s world makes it so challenging to be confident in yourself. Learning to not compare yourselves to others and believing in yourself is crucial. HiYa Karate is structured to provide opportunities for students to succeed in many different ways. From overcoming physical and mental obstacles, to our periodic belt testing throughout their training, our program is designed to instill confidence in students. We love to celebrate all those milestones with our students to help nurture their self confidence.

6 – Community

HiYa Karate was created with a sense of belonging within the dojo and the greater community. We provide opportunities for our students and families to come together during events we offer to help build the sense of community within our walls. HiYa Karate also recognizes the importance of community service and recognizes it within our curriculum from the start. We provide opportunities within our program to give back to the community through community events and charity drives. As our students get closer to earning their black belt (and beyond), community service hours are a required part of their journey.

7 – Discipline

Martial arts overall are strongly based around self-discipline and control. At HiYa Karate we strive for a good balance between discipline and fun. Our student creed that is recited at the beginning of each class emphasizes the four major principles of HiYa Karate. Respect for one’s parents, teachers, and peers, along with honor and integrity are standard practice in each class. When the time comes for students to obtain their next belt rank, we seek the approval from family and teachers to ensure the student is honoring our creed.

8 – Continuous Learning

We believe that a black belt does not signify the end of one's journey in martial arts. We have students ranging from white belts to 4th-degree black belts and beyond. There’s always more to learn, new ways to improve, and a next level to strive for. From student to teacher, we all have something we can learn from each other. This philosophy carries into other areas of life as well, including being a good student at school or employee at work. HiYa Karate instills a strong work ethic, a healthy curiosity, and desire to grow that will continue in our students for years to come.

9 – Competition

Karate fosters competition with oneself. Every student is expected to give their best effort and are rewarded with success when that happens. Should your child feel the need to enter a more competitive atmosphere, HiYa Karate also offers the chance to compete at local and national tournaments. Our students train year round outside of their normal classes. Over the years, HiYa Karate has seen much success both on and off the mats with our competition team. Since the start of the AAU National Point Sparring Team in 2018, HiYa Karate has seen several of our athletes obtain the amazing accomplishment of earning a place on the team. We currently have two of our athletes serving as members of the team in 2023!

10 – Focus

We hear from a lot of new parents that it is getting harder and harder to get kids to focus. With so many distractions in day to day life, it shouldn’t surprise us that so many kids are faced with this challenge. At HiYa Karate, focus is at the center of all our physical and mental training. Students can’t think about anything but the task at hand. HiYa Karate ensures that classes run in such a way that students must maintain focus and we have implemented different methods to help our instructors maintain student focus.
