Known for its breathtaking landscapes, historical significance, and the absence of motor vehicles, Mackinac Island is a beloved destination located in Lake Huron, between Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas. Steeped in history and offering luxurious accommodations, Grand Hotel is the perfect destination for families looking to create lasting memories. My family recently had the opportunity to experience a Grand Hotel getaway and we loved it. Wondering why? For children and parents alike, it's a chance to experience history firsthand.

One of the key reasons families should visit Grand Hotel is the variety of activities available. From swimming in the Esther Williams Swimming Pool to playing croquet on the lawn or enjoying a round of golf on the hotel’s well-manicured course, there’s something for every family member. The hotel also offers bike rentals, perfect for exploring the scenic trails of Mackinac Island, and carriage rides that allow families to take in the island’s natural beauty at a leisurely pace. The sense of freedom children experience on an island with no cars is also unmatched, making it a safe and exciting place to explore.

Dining at Grand Hotel is a treat for the whole family. The main dining room offers a formal, fine-dining experience with meals included in the package, featuring dishes that showcase the best of the region’s produce. For more casual dining, families can enjoy a meal at The Gate House or Sadie’s Ice Cream Parlor. The hotel’s commitment to catering to families means there are plenty of kid-friendly options, ensuring even the pickiest eaters are satisfied. Insider’s tip: Grand Hotel does have a dress code enforced in certain areas of the hotel. From one parent to another, it was such a delight to enjoy an upscale dinner with my children. They were thrilled to dress up and act like an adult (their description, not mine).

The hotel’s location on a bluff provides sweeping vistas of the Straits of Mackinac, and the grounds themselves are a lush, meticulously maintained paradise. Families can spend time exploring the gardens, playing lawn games, or simply relaxing on the porch while taking in the incredible scenery. I was so surpised to discover how crystal clear the water of Lake Huron is along the coast.

Staying at Grand Hotel offers families a rich cultural experience. The hotel’s close proximity to Mackinac Island’s historical landmarks, such as Fort Mackinac and the Mackinac Island State Park, allows families to dive deep into the island’s history. Exploring these sites offers educational opportunities for children, turning a vacation into a learning adventure. We were able to experience one of Grand Hotel's magnificeint carriage rides where we were taught about the history of the island and how people have lived on the island through the present day.

8. Dedicated Staff
From checking in at the front desk, to ordering evening drinks while dancing, to patiently waiting on my children to order (and then change their minds three times), we were treated like royalty (my son’s exact words). Always met with a smile, Grand Hotel staff are a dedicated, kind group of individuals who are dedicated to creating magical stays for all of their guests.
Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island is more than just a place to stay; it’s an experience that offers something for every member of the family. From its historical charm and kid-friendly activities to its beautiful scenery and special events, Grand Hotel provides a perfect setting for families to bond and create lasting memories. Since no two rooms at the resort are the same, I know we will have a different experience each time we visit. A stay at this iconic destination was an unforgettable experience full of memories my family will cherish for years to come.
